- INT. FBI HEADQUARTERS - DAY
-
- A train of agents carry in confiscated equipment from Jody's
- apartment: computers, monitors, a toaster, etc.--everything
- (except the arcade game). At a desk across from Cho and
- Ellis, Jody watches the parade.
-
- Ellis types on his laptop computer in silence.
-
- JODY
- (referring to Ellis's computer)
- '486?
-
- ELLIS
- Fifty-five mega-hertz.
-
- Beat.
-
- JODY
- You like it?
-
- ELLIS
- Ehh, I'll upgrade soon.
-
- JODY
- I got a 80 mega-hertz at home.
-
- Agent Rollins walks by with Jody's computer.
-
- ROLLINS
- Not any more.
-
- JODY
- (to Ellis)
- Isn't this a little extreme?!
-
- CHO
- Standard procedure.
-
- ELLIS
- (returning to the questioning)
- So, according to you,
- (reading from notes on computer)
- you had no idea that Clay was selling
- information, and...all these "gifts"
- from Clay were just tokens of affection?
-
- JODY
- (shrugs)
- Yeah.
-
- ELLIS
- (to Cho)
- She's gonna have to wear a wire.
-
- JODY
- (hesitant)
- I don't know about that.
-
- ELLIS
- (turning serious)
- Ms. Young, we have you intimately linked
- with a known hacker and over a dozen
- electronic crimes profiting millions for
- a syndicate of crooked investors.
- (stands, steps forward...)
- A room away, we hold a pile of
- contraband you can not explain and two
- gigabytes of encrypted files you won't
- let us access.
- (overboard)
- You're facing charges that could put you
- away for twenty to forty years--time
- you're are not ready to lose for some
- punk who seduced you with trinkets and
- attention.
-
- Jody crumbles. Ellis steps away and leans against a file
- cabinet. Cho covers.
-
- CHO
- (calm; sincere)
- Right now, we can't take Jack, but we're
- not gonna let Clay go free. You can
- take the fall or help us catch him as
- the crook he is.
-
- Jody looks at the fuming Ellis, the compassionate Cho, then
- turns away to think.
-
- Subtly, Cho turns to Ellis who gives him a little shrug.
- It's all an act--standard procedure.
-
- JODY
- (resolute)
- What do I do?
-
- CUT TO:
-
- INT. VAN - DAY
-
- Agents stir about the back of the agency's windowless van,
- making preparations for a bust. Guns, vests, and riot-gear
- fill one side; electronic monitoring equipment lines the
- other.
-
- Jody, opposite Ellis, watches Rollins load a shotgun.
-
- ELLIS
- (to Jody)
- We're not going to grab him unless he
- has his disks and notes.
-
- The cartridges SCRAPE down the metal barrel and CLICK at the
- bottom. Jody is mesmerized.
-
- As soon as you see that he has the waist
- pack, give us the signal.
-
- Ellis grabs Jody at the biceps and yanks her to attention.
-
- Jody! When you see the bag, just cross
- your arms and back away. We'll take
- care of the rest.
-
- JODY
- (referring to the shotgun)
- Is that really necessary?
-
- ELLIS
- (off Jody's look)
- You're still with us, right?!
-
- JODY
- (collects herself)
- Yeah.
-
- CHO
- (calling out from the front seat)
- 3rd Street!
-
- Ellis looks to Jody; she nods.
-
- ELLIS
- (to driver)
- Stop here.
-
- Everyone sways forward as the van slows and stops. Ellis
- opens the door for Jody.
-
- ELLIS
- Ignore the wire and just act normal.
-
- Jody quietly steps out and turns around; Ellis gives her a
- coach's "go get 'em" nod. Behind him, three heavy-armed
- agents are ready, willing, and able to apply overwhelming
- force. Without enthusiasm, Jody slowly closes the rear door
- of the van.
-
- CUT TO:
-
- EXT. PARKILL BUILDING LOADING DOCK - DAY
-
- Jody stands near the dumpster where she first met Clay.
- Absentmindedly, she scratches her chest. Feeling the
- microphone under her shirt, she stops.
-
- JODY
- (to mic)
- Sorry.
-
- She hears a CAR ENGINE and looks up.
-
- CLAY'S CAR
-
- drives past the FBI van, up to the loading dock.
-
- JODY hops down from the loading dock as Clay steps out of
- his car. He's not wearing the waist pack.
-
- CLAY
- (humble)
- I'm glad you wanted to talk.
-
- Jody looks around, distracted and nervous.
-
- I'm sorry I misled you. I thought I was
- making it easier by not letting you
- know...
-
- JODY
- (interrupting)
- Let's not talk about it Clay.
-
- CLAY
- (surprised)
- Don't you want an explanation?
-
- JODY
- Not now.
-
- INT. VAN - DAY
-
- Ellis and Rollins listen to the conversation through
- headphones. In the front seat, Agent Cho watches the scene
- with binoculars.
-
- CLAY (O.S.)
- If it's any consolation, I've only made
- a fraction of the money Jack pulled in.
-
- Excited, Ellis takes notes.
-
- Amtron's merge must have been the
- biggest...
-
- JODY (O.S.)
- (interrupting)
- I can't believe you did this to me.
-
- Ellis stops writing and freezes with his pen on the page,
- anxious for more.
-
- THE TAPE REEL
-
- spins slowly, recording the sound of FOOTSTEPS ON PAVEMENT.
-
- EXT. PARKILL PARKING LOT - DAY
-
- Jody and Clay walk around the car to the trunk.
-
- JODY
- I trusted you.
-
- CLAY
- I know.
-
- They both look away for a long awkward pause.
-
- Jody remembers her purpose.
-
- JODY
- So how much did you win off me?
-
- CLAY
- (shrugs)
- Nine companies...$5,000 for the
- first,...
- (thinks)
- $6,000 for the second...
-
- JODY
- (hands on hips)
- Get your calculator.
-
- Obediently, Clay turns to the trunk.
-
- CHO'S POV - THROUGH BINOCULARS
-
- Clay inserts the key in the lock, turns the key,...
-
- ELLIS (V.O.)
- Get ready.
-
- ...and opens the trunk.
-
- JODY
-
- looks inside.
-
- JODY'S POV - OPEN TRUNK
-
- Clay pushes aside some junk to reveal...his waist pack.
-
- JODY
-
- stands motionless--no signal. She reaches into the trunk,
- unzips the bag, and pulls out the calculator.
-
- INT. VAN - DAY
-
- ELLIS
- What's she doing?!
-
- CHO
- (mystified)
- Computing her earnings.
-
- Ellis presses the headphones to his ear.
-
- EXT. PARKILL PARKING LOT - DAY
-
- Clay watches Jody punch numbers into the calculator.
-
- CLAY
- I can give you whatever's left.
-
- She lifts the calculator in front of his face.
-
- JODY
- No, let's add it up.
-
- THE CALCULATOR
-
- displays an message using upside-down numerals: "ShISh."
-
- CLAY obeys.
-
- JODY
- (pressing buttons on the
- calculator)
- Five thousand times nine equals...
-
- THE CALCULATOR
-
- reads: "ELLIS."
-
- CLAY's eyes search the parking lot.
-
- CLAY
- Ahh...
-
- What's 5 times 9? They can't multiply to save their lives.
-
-
- INT. VAN - DAY
-
- Ellis listens closely, waiting for the answer.
-
- EXT. PARKILL PARKING LOT - DAY
-
- They hover over the calculator that has no answers.
-
- JODY
- Ahh...fifty-four.
-
- CLAY
- (correcting her)
- Forty-five!
-
- JODY
- Right, forty-five. Do you have the
- money here?
-
- CLAY
- No.
-
- Jody types another message.
-
- JODY
- (holding out the calculator)
- Where's your bag?
-
- THE CALCULATOR
-
- tells Clay to "LIE."
-
- CLAY looks back to Jody.
-
- CLAY
- (performing)
- It's at my place.
-
- JODY
- I'll have to come by and get my jack
- knife.
-
- CLAY
- (anxious to leave)
- Good. Great. It's really great you're
- giving me a second chance.
-
- Jody types a message.
-
- JODY
- (unconvincing)
- Oh, yeah.
-
- She hands him the calculator. He reads the message.
-
- THE DISPLAY reads: "GO2hELL."
-
- CLAY smiles and pitches the calculator in the trunk.
-
- CLAY
- Well.
- (backs away)
- I gotta go.
-
- He slams the trunk closed and walks around the car, scoping
- the parking lot. He spots the van and averts his eyes.
-
- JODY watches him go.
-
- CUT TO:
-
- INT. VAN - DAY
-
- Ellis slams the headphones on the console.
-
- ELLIS
- Damn!
- (rubs his eyes)
- Put her under house arrest.
-
- CUT TO:
-
- INT. OUTSIDE JACK'S OFFICE - EVENING
-
- A key ring crashes onto Diane's desk. She looks up from a
- report to see Clay standing over her.
-
- CLAY
- (desperate)
- I gotta borrow your car.
-
- DIANE
- I didn't drive.
-
- CLAY
- (takes his keys back)
- Shit.
-
- DIANE
- What's going on?
-
- CLAY
- Jody went to the feds.
-
- DIANE
- What!
-
- CLAY
- I may disappear for a while.
-
- Jack appears at the door of his office. Seeing Clay, he
- rushes over and interrupts.
-
- JACK
- (hushed)
- Clay, I'm dying.
- (pulls him over to the side)
- I need some new information!
-
- OFF TO THE SIDE
-
- CLAY
- The feds are on to me.
-
- JACK
- What! How do you know?
-
- CLAY
- I got a tip from a friend.
-
- JACK
- (suspicious)
- Is this friend involved?
-
- CLAY
- No.
-
- JACK
- (grave)
- No partners Clay.
-
- CLAY
- I know.
-
- Jack walks to the window, pondering what to do for a moment.
-
- JACK
- I'll handle this.
-
- CLAY
- What can you do?!
-
- JACK
- (defensive)
- Clay, I'm not without connections. Go
- home and pack, wait for my word.
-
- Clay scampers out. Jack rushes into his office and makes a
- phone call.
-
- JACK (O.S.)
- (into phone, hushed)
- Remember that favor you owe me?
-
- CUT TO:
-
- INT. CLAY'S APARTMENT - NIGHT
-
- In only the illumination of a penlight, Clay frantically
- packs his things.
-
- BUZZ! Someone's outside. Clay presses the "talk" button on
- the gate intercom.
-
- CLAY
- John?
-
- STATIC AND STREET NOISE BLAST from the speaker.
-
- VOICE
- (unrecognizable within the noise)
- Yeah!
-
- Clay buzzes him in, opens the door, and returns to packing.
- He stuffs his laptop and other equipment into a large duffel
- bag then walks off-screen to the bedroom.
-
- The living room is quiet. Outside the door, DISTANT
- FOOTSTEPS approach. From the bedroom comes the sound of
- HANGERS RATTLING in a closet.
-
- After a minute, Clay re-enters the living room with a pile
- of shirts draped over his arm. He looks around--no John.
- He drops the clothes and slowly walks to the door.
-
- CLAY
- John?!
-
- Clay pulls a driver from the set of golf clubs in the middle
- of the room and creeps behind the open door.
-
- A FIGURE steps through the doorway into the room.
-
- CLAY prepares to swing.
-
- The Figure reaches for the light switch and turns it on.
-
- CLAY checks his swing. It's only John, dressed in sweats,
- hair still wet.
-
- JOHN
- Damn, this new place is a maze!
-
- CLAY
- (putting down the club)
- Thanks for coming so quick.
-
- Clay turns off all the lights, except his penlight.
-
- JOHN
- Are you alright?
-
- CLAY
- (emotionally drained)
- I will be when I'm out of here.
- (beat)
- Thanks for helping, John.
-
- They share a quick, guy hug.
-
- JOHN
- Hey, anything for you.
-
- CUT TO:
-
- INT. CAR ON CITY STREET - NIGHT
-
- CU ON CLAY
-
- Clay drives with windows open, escaping the city.
-
- The high beams from the car behind him reflect off the
- rearview mirror into his eyes. He squints.
-
- Approaching a red light, he applies the brake.
-
- EXT. CITY STREET - NIGHT
-
- CLOSE ON BEAT-UP SKYLARK
-
- Illuminating in red, three cold faces fill the car behind
- Clay. The driver jerks the wheel to the left.
-
- THE SKYLARK
-
- squeals into the open, left turn lane.
-
- CLAY
-
- looks out the left window--horror breaks over his face.
-
- THE SKYLARK
-
- races up to the Clay's white Prelude and stops. Two Uzi's
- pop out of the side windows and riddle the car with bullets.
- A hand throws a molitof cocktail through the window.
-
- CLAY'S CAR
-
- explodes into flames. The Skylark races away.
-
- CUT TO:
-
- EXT. SKYLINE - DAWN
-
- The sun breaks over the horizon; it's a new day.
-
- EXT. CEMETERY - MORNING
-
- Ashes pour from an urn into the ground.
-
- REVEREND (V.O.)
- ...Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.
-
- DIANE AND JODY stand side-by-side on the inside edge of the
- gathering of mourners. Most of the people disperse, except
- a couple in their sixties, Clay's FATHER and MOTHER, feeding
- one another tissues. Clay's Father wears a tie we've seen
- before, sent with condolences from Jack Cole.
-
- JODY AND DIANE
-
- walk from the site in silence. Diane's been crying; Jody's
- still in shock.
-
- JODY
- Did you ever meet his parents?
-
- DIANE
- No...You?
-
- Jody shakes her head. They walk a few more paces in
- silence.
-
- John chose an bad time to disappear on
- one of his wilderness road trips.
-
- JODY
- I wish I could disappear.
-
- Diane reaches for Jody's hand, which Jody gives. They grasp
- tightly, but do not cry.
-
- ON THE DRIVEWAY
-
- Ellis stands next to the FBI sedan; Cho sits behind the
- wheel. Ellis approaches the two women.
-
- ELLIS
- I'm sorry about Clay.
-
- Diane and Jody ignore him; they release their handhold, walk
- around him, and reconnect. Ellis turns.
-
- If you let us take him, he'd still be
- alive!
-
- The words hurt Jody, already burdened with guilt.
-
- Agent Cho hops out and opens the rear door for Jody. The
- women hug once more then Jody steps into the car. Ellis
- approaches and slams the door closed on Jody in the
- backseat.
-
- PAN FORWARD ALONG CAR
-
- EXT. STREET OUTSIDE JODY'S APARTMENT - DAY
-
- CONTINUE PAN FORWARD ALONG CAR TO THE FRONT SEAT (LATER)
-
- Agents Ellis and Cho sip coffee, watching out the driver's
- window into Jody's apartment, a few feet away.
-
- CHO
- She's taking it pretty well.
-
- Ellis nods, sympathetic.
-
- CUT TO:
-
- INT. JODY'S APARTMENT - DAY
-
- Jody plays furiously on the Ms. Pacman arcade game, the one
- piece of electronic equipment remaining in her barren
- apartment.
-
- UP CLOSE,
-
- tears fill her eyes. She yanks the joystick desperately.
-
- ON SCREEN,
-
- brightly colored ghosts chase Ms. Pacman through a maze.
-
- JODY
-
- raises a hand to smear the tears off her cheek.
-
- ON SCREEN
-
- Ms. Pacman eats a pulsating pod, turning all the ghosts
- blue. She chases the ghosts and gobbles them for points.
- The game's speed and volume increase with Jody's emotions.
-
- JODY
-
- slowly turns her grief into determination. She blinks the
- last tears out of her eyes.
-
- HER HAND
-
- controls the joystick with refined precision.
-
- ON SCREEN
-
- Ms. Pacman fakes and dodges around the five ghosts, once
- again in hot pursuit of her.
-
- JODY
-
- looks outside where...
-
- INSERT - AGENT'S CAR OUTSIDE
-
- ...the two agents are preoccupied: Ellis takes notes and
- Agent Cho flips through Road & Track.
-
- ON SCREEN
-
- Two of the ghosts converge on the motionless Ms. Pacman.
- "GAME OVER" appears on the screen.
-
- JODY
-
- looks back down at the screen.
-
- ON SCREEN
-
- "HIGH SCORE." Jody is prompted to enter her initials.
- Instead, she spells: O-U-T.
-
- JODY
-
- swats at the button. CLICK! The back panel of the machine
- flops open. She smiles.
-
- She stoops and begins to pull out her hidden stash of
- equipment: laptop computer, cellular link, etc.--gifts of
- the late Clay Campbell.
-
- CUT TO:
-
- INT. AGENTS' CAR - DAY
-
- Ellis and Cho sit quietly. The magazine page CRACKLES as
- Cho slowly turns the page. Then quiet again.
-
- Suddenly, the top of the roof caves with a LOUD METALLIC
- CRUNCH. The agents start. Two roller blades skate down the
- windshield, across the hood, and off the bumper. Jody has
- made her escape!
-
- EXT. STREET OUTSIDE JODY'S APARTMENT - DAY
-
- Jody races down the street with a backpack full of high-tech
- equipment. She rounds the corner before Cho starts the car.
-
- EXT. HILLY RESIDENTIAL STREETS - DAY
-
- JODY tucks into a squat and streaks down the incline.
-
- THE FED'S CAR screeches around the corner and barrels down

-
- CUT TO:
-
- EXT. HIGH-TRAFFIC STREET - DAY
-
- JODY races down the sidewalk, hoping on and off the curb,
- slaloming around pedestrians, jumping a dog.
-
- THE FED'S CAR tracks her on the side.
-
- THE AGENTS watch Jody through the side window when she grabs
- a meter and makes a sharp left turn, directly behind the
- car.
-
- JODY slips through the traffic to the opposite side.
-
- Turn signal flashing, the agents try to merge over two lanes
- and make a U-turn. The traffic HONKS and slows to a crawl.
-
- CUT TO:
-
- EXT. ALLEYWAY - DAY
-
- Jody is well down an alley when the agent's car swerves in.
-
- THE CAR
-
- closes in, accelerating down the straight-away. In the
- distance, she can see that it's a dead-end.
-
- INSIDE
-
- ELLIS
- (looking at Cho with concern)
- You see that this is a dead-end.
-
- CHO
- (intoxicated by speed)
- Yeah!
-
- THE CAR
-
- accelerates to ramming speed.
-
- JODY
-
- rapidly approaches the wall. Trashcans and doorways whiz
- by.
-
- THE CAR
-
- closes in on her.
-
- JODY
-
- spots her escape: a fire-escape ladder hanging over the
- alleyway, fifty feet from the dead-end. She readies
- herself...
-
- THE CAR
-
- closes fast.
-
- JODY
-
- reaches up, grabs the ladder, and swings up, over the
- speeding car and back down to the pavement.
-
- CHO'S FOOT
-
- slams on the brakes.
-
- THE CAR skids and crashes into the wall.
-
- ELLIS AND CHO are shaken but not hurt.
-
- ELLIS
- Nice fucking driving.
-
- ELLIS turns to look out the back window.
-
- JODY skates down the alley and disappears around the corner.
-
- ELLIS
- (referring to Jody)
- No backing out now.
-
